Will Lake Eyre fill in 2011

Lake Eyre with water

Lake Eyre with water

Is Lake Eyre filling from the cyclone still or will it soon be dry again?

We want to see the Lake with water in it and hear that it will take about 4 months for water to reach Lake Eyre from where the rain falls.
I hear that Lake Eyre South is navigable, but how long will it be so, do you think? And is the Cooper Creek flowing?
We are South African born and only living here for 2years or so now, so are still very green. We want to see bird life especially, and of course the lake at the best it will get. Can you help? We must travel with 4x4 from Perth and DON'T want to miss it!! Thanks, Bridget.

Floodwaters
by: Rita

Hi Bridget,

Water from the coastal floods in Queensland will never reach L. Eyre. However, as Yasi weakened and moved inland it brought torrential rain, especially in northern South Australia.

So, yes, I understand that you want to know when is the best time to do the long drive from Perth.

When you read the statements on the National Parks Department website there is still a lot of uncertainty about what is going to happen.

Lake Eyre is huge, you can't always see water from the access points on the shoreline. Right now, there is water in Lake Eyre South and in certain depressions (Belt Bay) of the northern lake.
Also birds won't always be on the shores, even if tourists would love that. Birds gather at the best places, along channels and water courses, the places where they find fish.

So, whenever you go, consider booking a flight over the lake. That's what everyone is saying, a flight over the lake is the best way to appreciate and enjoy the beauty.

Be well prepared for an Australian Outback adventure. Check weather and road conditions to be sure that rain won't spoil your experience.

Check the Driving Tips section and read more about the Oodnadatta Track.

Have a safe trip.

Lake Eyre is currently at 80% capacity and more water is coming down the Cooper Creek which is actually fed by the QLD channels I believe.

Great site by the way Rita!

Thank you for the update (and the compliment).

It is always so exciting to see water flowing into Lake Eyre. The transformation of the dry Australian Outback after the rains is just beautiful.

Lake Eyre - how long for water view?
by: Errol

My wife and I are planning a trip to Lake Eyre in early September 2011. Will this be too late to see the lake at its best?

Lake Eyre inSeptember
by: Rita

Hi Errol,

Of course, nobody knows for certain what is going to happen in the next couple of months, weatherwise.
As winter arrives evaporation rates will be lower.

Water in Belt Bay is still rising, and perhaps the Cooper flood will make it to Lake Eyre in a few weeks, months?

Maybe you won't see much water from the shore, but I think a flight over Lake Eyre will be worth any time until next summer.

Keep checking what's going on. The Lake Eyre page has the links to sources where you get the recent updates.

Rita
