I am an ex Aussie returning for a two months trip and wondering what you know about camper rental.
Do you recommend a particular company and price?
We are looking for a vehicle for 2 adults that has sleeping accommodation but does not have to be too fancy (we don't need a shower, but sink, stove plus tent extension would be good).

Toyota bushcamper

Hi Bob,

The first decision you have to made is if you want to stay on bitumen, or want to go inland and use gravel roads and tracks as well.

As an ex Aussie you certainly know that you can travel many unsealed roads with a normal car or camper. However, car rental companies won't allow you to go on dirt roads unless you hire a 4 WD.

I am a fan of the Toyota bushcamper. Actually, it is the only camper we have personal experience with.

The bushcamper has a sink and water tank, a fridge, cooker, dual battery and two 90 l fuel tanks.

The beds are okay, although it requires a bit of climbing to reach the bed in the top. You also can't sit upright in the upper bed, but you have a great view out of the windows.

There is a lot of store room, but you have to move large baggage to the front seats once you set up beds at night. It is a bit of moving things every day, but still, I like the camper.

4WD cars are the most expensive to hire, whether it is the bushcamper or a 4WD without camping facilities. At Discovery Campervans you can compare all kind of campers from Britz, Maui, Kea etc.

Our experience with Britz has always been very good, reliable car, and no problems to get the cost for the damaged tyre back.

4WD Campers
by: Gerald (N.Z)

We have just returned to New Zealand after 11 days in an Apollo 4WD Adventure camper. It was big enough for 2 adults -double bed, fridge, inside and outside cooking facilities ,sink and an awning. Had no problems with the company or the vehicle. We travelled from Alice Springs to Ularu via the Meerinie Loop and into side trips like Palm Valley, Grosse Bluff etc. There are some roads and tracks which rental companys forbid you to drive. We wanted to do some other 4WD side trips but rain put a stop to them. I own a 4WD at home and think the rental had the capabilities to most places my own vehicle will go. The camper we had was a pop top.
