Travelling to Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre South from the Oodnadatta Track

Lake Eyre South from the Oodnadatta Track

Hi there,
We were planning to travel to lake Eyre in the next month once the water goes down to allow travel access, there is sooo much water around and we were wondering what was the best way to get there...
We've heard the Oodnadatta track is good? Any suggestions of things to do along the way, and once we arrive in lake Eyre? Any great bird watching sites and must see attractions at lake Eyre?
Any travel permits we may need, or anything else we need to know before embarking on this adventure.. We will be travelling from the east coast, so it will be a bit of a trek, but we're looking forward to it.
Sorry about all the questions...Thanks :D

Hi,

You are right, there is a lot of water around, we can only hope the rain stops soon. Hey, the good thing is that the country looks beautiful after all the rains.

Yes, the Oodnadatta Track is good, when it is dry. The best route to go there is via the Flinders Ranges. You find lots of info about things to do when you read these pages on the Outback Guide.

When you travel along one of the public access routes to the shores of Lake Eyre you need a permit. Be aware that these tracks are remote and rough, and you need to be well prepared and carry plenty of water. Read more about how to get there on the Lake Eyre page.

Right now the birds have many lakes and waterholes around the Outback to gather, so it is hard to say where you will see the most.
A flight over Lake Eyre from Marree or William Creek is certainly the best thing to get the most out of your Lake Eyre adventure.

Here are the most recent visitor's questions, tips and discussions. Worth to read if you plan a trip.

Travel to Lake Eyre following the January 2011 rains, and there has been even more rain since then.

Will L. Eyre fill in 2011?

Birds at Lake Eyre
by: Tony B

It's difficult to point to a specific place where you can find the masses of nesting birds that you may have seen on TV, because of all that wet country after so much rain. The birds have so many places to choose from that they are spread out right across the outback. It's probably a good idea to take a flight out of William Creek or Oodnadatta as the operators will know where the birds are in their localities.
