Travel times for Oodnadatta track
by Graham
Start of Borefield road in Roxby Downs
My wife and I are planning a trip to Darwin in September 2010, and were thinking about driving to Coober Pedy via the Oodnadatta track. Response to Travel times for Oodnadatta trackby: RitaHi Graham, To be honest, I am not the right person to ask about travel times. My husband and I are keen photographers, and we stop at every wildflower, ruin and tree to take photo along the way. This takes time. When we travelled along the Oodnadatta Track the first time we stayed overnight at Marree, Wiliam Creek, Oodnadatta and Marla. We roughly travelled 200 km each day. Anyway, from Port Augusta to Bopeechee to William Creek and Coober Pedy it is approximately 675 km. If you do that in one day, you won't have much time to stop along the way. Coward Springs or William Creek are great places to stop for a night. From Bopeechee to William Creek is one of the most interesting sections of the track, lots of old railway sidings and mound springs. You come even very close to Lake Eyre South, perhaps there'll be still water to see from the shores. The first part of the Borefield road has a lot of low dune crossings, so you probably will drive more slowly in this part with the trailer. Check out the road conditions a few days before you go to see if there are any problems that might slow you down. Have a great trip. Rita Need a map?
