Marree Roadhouse

Your web site is very informative, thank you. We are senior cits with a little caravan which has normal road clearance. Would you suggest we ge to Marree and use our Suzuki 4 wheel to look around or can we get closer to the lake. Are the camp sites open all year and as we are very new to this have you any tips, this will be our first outback trip . Thanks for your help.

Towing to the lake not recommended
by: Rita

Hi Peter and Sheila,

Thanks for your kind words about my site, I am glad you find it helpful.

You can read about the two access routes to Lake Eyre North on the Lake Eyre page, there is also a box with links to check the current water levels of the lake.
It is not recommended to take a caravan on these routes, even in good conditions. I would leave the caravan either in Marree or William Creek when you drive out to the lake.

You can see Lake Eyre South, which is currently full, from the Oodnadatta Track. You'll find several pages with step by step description of the track. It is really one of my favourites.

The campgrounds along the Oodnadatta Track are open all year. The question right now is whether the track is open at all. The area has received so much rain this year, and the roads have been closed every couple of days.

The Oodnadatta Track is usually in good condition, and it is no problem to tow a small caravan. But there are quite a few creek crossings, which are usually dry, but certainly not right now.

I would wait a few weeks to see if the situation will improve. Check the weather forecasts and road conditions (link to all services in the box on the right) before you go.

Have a safe trip and enjoy.
Rita
