Sydney to Alice Springs and back

Alice Springs

Hi there, first of all, your site is very useful!
I am dreaming/planning of an outback road trip with my husband from Sydney to Alice Springs in December.

We would have around 12 days to do it and would like to get there via Cobar and Broken Hill and return via Mildura and Wagga Wagga.

According to good ol' google maps and my own division of driving days, this is possible with 9 days of mainly driving (at most 10 hours/day, averaging around 7) and leaving us around 3 days to explore the Alice Springs area.

I realise it will be very hot, we are used to extreme desert conditions and most non-driving activity would be early morning or evening. We would be driving our 4wd Pajero.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan?

A long drive

Hi Phoenix,

Thanks for your nice comment, I am glad you find the Outback Guide useful.

Well, it is a lot of driving, but you are aware of it. Any extra day would make it more reasonable, and would give you a little extra time at places you like.

Do you also want to visit Uluru, or just explore Alice Springs and surrounds?

You'll find more info on the site. There have been other Sydneysiders who asked questions about visiting the red centre.

Happy planning, and let us know how the trip was.

Rita

PS: Just for anyone who plans to go from Sydney to Alice Springs. The guided tour below takes 13 days one-way, for a return trip you'll need at least three weeks to make it a pleasure.:)

Sydney to Alice Springs Outback Adventure

Travel from Sydney along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide, Flinders Ranges, to Coober Pedy, Uluru and Alice Springs.

This 13-Days tour gives you great insight about Australia's various landscapes. Stay at shared budget accommodation, or upgrate the package to have your own motel room.

thanks, decided to stay in NSW
by: Phoenix

Thanks for your prompt reply, Rita. I talked about the plan with my hubby and we decided that with the time we have available, it makes more sense to do an outback road trip in NSW rather than trying to go so far and come back in less than two weeks. We'll get to Alice Springs/Uluru eventually but we'll wait until we have more time.
Cheers,
Phoenix

Outback NSW is great
by: Rita

Hi Phoenix,

there are beautiful places in NSW, I really liked the Darling River Run and the area around Broken Hill.

It's about time I start a NSW section in this guide. :)

Have a great trip.

Rita
