Hi Rita,
We are thinking about going up to Brisbane from Adelaide with our camper trailer and we are not sure about safety area for us to sleep over at the bush or caravan park area at three different places at Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Bourke.
Do you think there are any problem with Aboriginals that they can break in and steal things etc... do you have any advices about that? Any ideas which place is the best for us to stay safely?

Use common sense
by: Rita

Hi Lindsay,

If you "feel good" in a place it is certainly okay to stay there, that's what I mean with use common sense.

Wilcannia has a bad reputation... what is true or false about all the stories I can't judge. The town certainly has a lot of social problems. There are a few grand old buildings from Wilcania's heydays as river port. But there are also many abandoned and boarded-up houses. I've been to Wilcannia twice, stayed at a motel the first time and passed through a couple of weeks ago. I am afraid to say, Wilcannia is a place where I feel slightly tense.
The caravan park was closed for the general public in 2004, however the Central Darling Shire describes the park as a pleasant spot for travellers. Just call them to confirm the caravan park is open.

Broken Hill is a very nice city with two caravan parks, and there is another one in Silverton about 25km west.

Bourke is much smaller than Broken Hill but has also a lot of history. There are two caravan parks, one in North Bourke, close to the Darling River, which is very nice.

A general thought about safe camping, there are "bad apples" anywhere. I've talked to people who had something stolen or other troubles in a caravan park. They prefer to stay overnight in a rest area along the road, or in the bush while others feel better having company.

Have a good trip.

Rita
