Outback from Melbourne

Junction mine, Broken Hill

Rita,
I will be in Melbourne in January and have 2 days to spare. I realize this isn't enough time to drive out to the real outback. Is there any place within a reasonable (day-trip) distance that I can experience the outback landscape?

Thanks and great site!
Nick

The Outback is far away

Hi Nick,

I am glad you like my site :).

Well, it is hard to experience real Outback landscapes from Melbourne in a day or two, especially if you think of red earth and sand dunes. I am afraid Victoria doesn't offer much of that.

You could fly to Broken Hill, drive to Silverton and the Mundi Mundi plain lookout (about 30 km out of BH) to get a real Outback feeling.

But there are other interesting things to do around Melbourne.

a) Visit Healesville Sanctuary to see Australian wildlife.

b) Take a tour to the goldfields. Ballarat and Bendigo are the major towns in the area, but there are smaller villages around with a lot of flair and history.

c)Take a tour to the Great Ocean Road, the rugged coastline is really stunning.

Fact is, the further you drive to the northwest from Melbourne, to the Grampians and beyond, the lonelier it gets.

Thanks

Rita,

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured I couldn't get a true outback experience with only a few days. I did note the spots you mentioned in some of the info
I've seen, so I think I'll go ahead and visit those instead of flying further out from Melbourne.
