Hello Rita,

I live in Alice Springs and the conversation got around to the longest straightest stretch of the Stuart Hwy. Do you know where it is and how long it is?

Hi Rick,

now that's a good question! I studied my huge wall-map of Australia. Well there are quite a few straight stretches along the Stuart Hwy, but nothing as long as the 146 km on the Eyre Hwy.

There's one south of Marla, one north of Alice, both look like approx. 40km.
Further north are more sections where the road looks quite straight, but only about 30km length.

Longest straightest stretch Stuart Hwy

Having cycled this highway last year, I know that north of Taylor Creek Rest Area, there is a 38km straight stretch until the highway reaches an overpass crossing The Ghan railway line. Taylor Creek rest area is 40km north of Barrow Creek.
I wasn't aware of the stretches near Marla or just north of Alice Springs being as straight, possibly because there were a few hills to break the monotony.
