Lake Eyre

Just wondering which is the best track to see the most, as we are planning to go to lake Eyre in a couple of weeks.

Response to Lake Eyre

Hi,

Lake Eyre filling with water is the most exciting event happening in the South Australian Outback right now.

This map covers the Lake Eyre Basin & tracks in the south-east.

The most recent information (May 2009) is that water can only be seen from Halligan Bay. Depending on the wind directions, water might be 200 m or up to 2 km from the shore.

The track to Halligan Bay departs from William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track and it is open for 4 WD vehicles. It is very corrugated in places and has lots of bulldust patches. Slow down and drive carefully.

Find more information on my Lake Eyre page, including a link to a satellite map with the current water levels.

Lake Eyre trip has a question from another reader and more tips and links to recent photos.

In my opinion, the best way to appreciate the water in Lake Eyre is a scenic flight over the lake. Wright Air operates flights from William Creek. It is a good idea to book a flight in advance to avoid disappointment, especially if your time is limited.

Have a safe trip.

Rita
