Hi Greta, fellow German :),

Looks like you are on a great adventure trip in OZ!

You know you need a working holiday visa to work in Australia, do you? So I reckon you already have it?

I am pretty sure that there are many jobs around in the Outback, in the tourism/hospitality industry, fruit-picking, and general work on stations.

How to find them? Check newspapers, country magazines, ask at backpacker accommodations, in fact, ask everyone you come across in Australia. You know someone has a mate who knows someone outback who's urgently looking for a helping hand. That's how it often works. :)

I read the other day in my favourite Outback magazine that the Birdsville Pub has vacancies for kitchen hands, bar and housekeeping staff. Minimum contract 6 months. That's the downside, as you are not allowed to work more than three months with any employer on the working holiday visa.

Check out this site for more information about temporary jobs, and how to find them.

And if anyone of my Australian readers has a job to offer for Greta, please drop me a line.

Good luck, and have fun,
Rita

Mobile phones in the Outback
by: Rita

Hi Ed,

provided that you dialled the correct number, you should reach your brother, sooner or later. Leave him a message on the mailbox, or send him a text message; he will get it if he returns to an area with mobile phone coverage.

Fact is, that a normal mobile phone won't work in the Australian Outback if you are away from towns.

Telstra's new NextG network replaced the old CDMA network, and is supposed to have better coverage in Outback areas. However, one needs a phone that is matched to the frequency of the network.
If he is on a station far away from any towns, there is certainly no coverage at all.

Of course, most Outback towns and roadhouses have a public pay phones that can be used for international calls. Probably, you've already heard from your brother by now.

Rita
