Horse riding in Outback Queensland

Camping at stations and doing some horseback riding - is it possible?

Looking at going back to western qld, in 2010 and was wondering if there were any properties you could camp at and do some horse riding at the same time.

Any ideas? Thanks, Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,
Well, most stations that offer camping and stations stays don't advertise horse riding. However, I think horse riding is certainly possible at a few stations. The only way to find out is to contact the station owners.

Are you looking for a specific region in western Queensland? Anyway, here is a list of Farm Stays in Queensland with details to contact station owners.

Rain and localised flooding at Kilcowera Station
by: Toni

Hi Rita and Sylvia, we had the best Christmas present ever - it rained all day and we received 97 mls! The 2 creeks close to the house flooded out very big and filled our lagoon, the water then flows down through the neighbours place and into NSW eventually ending in the Bulloo River Overflow in very big floods.

Then on the 31st and the 1st January (today) there were storms about and another 16 mls and the creeks flooding again! There are birds everywhere, ducks and terns, chats and banded lapwings, Bourkes Parrots and lots of budgerigars.

Kilcowera is starting to look fantastic again.

Sylvia we don't do horse riding here but concentrate more on bush walking, photography, birdwatching, yabbying and self guided tours around the place. Happy New Year to all, Regards Toni

Kilcowera station

Hi Toni,

that's fantastic news! Finally, you got the much needed rain, too. However, it is sad that the rain came too late for your cattle.

For anyone interested in Outback station life, check out Toni's interesting blog, and the page about Kilcowera Station in the Outback Guide.

Happy New Year,
Rita

Cooper at Innamincka
by: Sylvia

Hi Rita,
thanks for the e-mail, just wondering if you know how the Cooper Creek is running over the causeway at Innamincka. Have they had the rain
further out than Toni's place. Am interested to know as we were out at Innamincka in May 2009 and the Cooper was still running maybe a foot over the
causeway. It's terrific they've finally had the rain out there, hope it keeps on coming down.
Thanks for the great newsy newsletter, Sylvia

A little rain in the desert
by: Rita

Hi Sylvia,

I don't know exactly how the Cooper is at Innamincka today. I got an report that says the Cooper is a trickle, and the causeway is open to all vehicles, but that was one week ago.

The latest (3.1.) Outback Roads Report says that the road from Innamincka to Arrabury via the Patchawarra Bore is closed due to rain.

And hey, they had rain in Oodnadatta at Christmas, the Neales River is flowing, and perhaps there will be visible water again in Lake Eyre.

I am happy you like the Outback news :).
