Simpson Desert

Hi, my partner and I are looking at doing a trip from Townsville to Uluru at the end of 2011. We were planing to go to Birdsville and head to Uluru from there.
Is it possible to get from Birdsville across the Simpson Desert in a well equipped 4wd land cruiser? If so, would you be able to tell me the route we would take? Preferably through Finke.

Thanks.

Do not go in summer
by: Rita

Hi Tenille,

It is not recommended to cross the Simpson Desert in the hot season.
That's why the Simpson Desert Parks in Qld and SA are closed from 1st December to 15th March.
Due to the heavy rains there is no access to the Simpson Desert from Birdsville at the moment.
Eyre Creek is flowing and the area around the big red is flooded. The Warburton crossing further south is possibly closed until the end of 2011.

Further recommendations for Simpson Desert crossings:

*Travel in convoy
*Take a satphone or HF radio and GPS
*Don't tow a trailer
*Carry plenty of water, fuel and food

Remember, this is a very remote area and crossing the numerous sand dunes can be a real challenge.
