Greetings Rita,

My husband and I will be flying to Alice Spring on Dec. 18th, and from there we plan to drive down to Adelaide and Melbourne.

Few people have told us that Alice Spring and the Northern Outback are not good ideas in December because of the intense heat and the relentless flies, we would really like to camp during 6 days we will be in "Red Center"; since you are a true Aussie, we want your opinion, how bad really is, would you recommend a change of plans?

Because of our work schedules, December is the only month when we can take a long vacation together; I have dreamt all my life about visiting Australia's outback and now that I have the opportunity, it doesn't seem to be a good idea...

What do you think: Alice Spring or no Alice Spring in December?

Thank you Rita, I look forward to your reply!

Denisse

Go for your dream
by: Rita

Hi Denisse,

if visiting the Australian Outback has been your dream for such a long time, I'd say go for it!

Yes, it certainly will be hot, but in the inland it is a dry heat, and the nights are pleasantly cool.

Let me give you some statistics from the Australian weather bureau.
The mean maximum temperature for Alice Springs in December is 35.8°C. Temps are usually between 30° and 35°C, but go rarely over 40°C.
The mean minimum temperature is 20.2°C which is ideal for camping. The mean temperature at 9 am is 28.4°C. Plan your main walking activities until noon, and you'll be fine.

As for the flies, they can be a nuisance at any time of the year. Read my response to another questions about bushflies in the Australian Outback, you really don't know when and where the flies become disgusting.
The Stuart Highway and Uluru Tours page give you more information to plan your trip to the red centre.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions, and happy planning.

Rita

BTW, unfortunately, I am not a "true Aussie", but I have fallen in love with the Outback the first time I travelled there. It is a magnificent place, and it can make you become addicted :).
