Bush flies

Hi Rita!

my husband and I are planning a trip to Australia beginning of April and we were planning to go and spend a few days in the Red Center (Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, the Olgas and Uluru) but some friends told us the area would be full of flies at that time of year and that it would be very annoying for us. Is this true?? Is April not a good time to visit the Red Center ??

Flies can be everywhere
by: Rita

Hi Corine,

bush flies are like the weather, it is hard to predict when and where they appear in annoying numbers.
I said this in another reply to a bush fly question, when I visited Uluru late in September, there were no flies around.

Bush flies love warm temperatures, but not too hot. In cool temps they are inactive, or even die. They need a bit of moisture as well.
It is said that around Alice Springs bush flies are always around, but they only get pesky after rain.

I found an interesting article, actually, it is the excerpt from a bestselling book about bush flies. You'll get some insight and information about their life circle, and how they spread over Australia. You'll read that they come in swarms to the cities as well, in spring and early summer.

I don't think that I am especially hardy, but I only remember very few incidents when the bush flies really were a pest.
Isn't it good to know that they won't follow you into a house, tent, or car?

Rest assured, enjoy the Australian Outback and your trip.

Rita
