You want to visit the Australian Outback and you search for cheap flights to Australia?
You don't know where to start to find the best deals for flights to Australia?
Let me help you to see the light at the end of the tunnel. :)

If you live somewhere in the northern hemisphere, you'll have to face a long flight. 25 hours, perhaps 30 hours, that's going to test your patience.

I don't want to scare you, but you might realise that such a long flight won't be cheap at all. However, with some background info, I am sure you're going to find some options for cheap flights to Australia.

Let's do your homework!

Facts to consider to get the best deals for cheap flights to Australia

With a flexible schedule you can save some money. Check out the flight first, and then ask your boss for the days off! Getting a cheap flight to Australia depends on:
  • The time of the year. I've always found that you get the best deals from April to June. At least that's the fact if you book from Germany/Europe.
This is autumn in Australia, and the weather could be a little cool if you plan to go for a swim on the southern beaches. But for most trips to the Australian Outback the time of the year is just fine. Be prepared for some cool nights though!
The most expensive season is around December and January, especially between Christmas and New Year.
  • Book as early as you can. I remember our trusted travel agent once told us, that when you ask people on your flight about their ticket price, you'll get surprising answers. Price differences can be several hundred dollars. Yes, even if you sit in the same cabin class on the plane. Airlines have different tariffs within the economy class. Travel agents will only get a certain amount of the cheapest tickets. Again, start your investigation early.
  • The departure airport at home, and your destination in Australia. Don't search only for flights from your nearest airport. It is wise to look at ticket price options from other international airports in your area.

Australia has several international airports, there are more destinations than Sydney and Melbourne. The city of arrival depends on which part of Australia and the Australian Outback you want to see.
Check options for Adelaide, Darwin, Perth and Brisbane as well to avoid an additional domestic flight. Another way to save money could be to fly to Sydney and depart from any other airport.

  • Should you book online, or with your local travel agent? This question is hard to answer. It depends on how much work you want to invest to explore all options, and if you want to book accommodation, tours, or a car in advance, too. Your local travel agent could compile you a good deal if you buy more than just a cheap flight to Australia.

If you plan your first trip to Australia the task of organising everything might seem a bit overwhelming, so you'll probably be better off with a local travel agent.

Which airline should you choose?

Phew, another question that can't be answered in one sentence. It really depends on where in the world you live, whether or not international airlines in your country offer direct flights to Australia.
Let me give you a slightly incomplete overwiev of airlines that offer flights to Australia. I just want you to become familiar with a few of the major airlines that operate flights to Australia. Here we go!

British Airways

British Airways is one of the world's leading international airlines. BA operates around the world. So wherever you live, it is always worth to check them for a cheap flight to Australia.
British Airways is also an One World member. You can always connect part of your flight with them and Qantas. Whatever is the best for you.

Use this quick flight search tool if you depart from the United Kingdom.

If you start your trip to Australia from somewhere else in the world, please use this link to British Airways and enter your country of departure into the search box first.

Become a British Airways Executive Club member and collect points while you fly around the world. Your next flight definitely will be a cheap flight to Australia.

Qantas

While you are looking for cheap flights to Australia, you may also consider that time is money as well. You don't want to spend a huge chunk of your precious holidays on airports and airplanes, do you?
That's why I always choose Qantas. They just offer the quickest connection from Germany, not only to Sydney and Melbourne, but to Adelaide and other major Australian cities as well.

Qantas, which is often called the flying kanagaroo, offers direct flights to Sydney from London and Frankfurt in Europe.

Singapore and Hong Kong are the major Qantas hubs in south-east Asia.

From North America, Qantas has direct flights to Sydney from New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. From LA you can also fly to Melbourne and Brisbane. Buenos Aires in South America, and Johannesburg, South Africa, have direct Qantas flights to Sydney. Please check the Qantas flight map here.

Extra Tip: Do you think you'll go to Australia more than once? Consider becoming a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program. Earn points on your first flight to Australia, and the second one will be really a cheap flight. Joining the Frequent Flyer program is free for international travellers. Sorry, Australian and New Zealand residents have to pay a one time fee.

As Qantas is a member of the One World Alliance and also accepts other partner airlines, you'll have quite a few international airlines you can use and earn frequent flyer points. Check out about the partner airlines here.

Emirates

Another well-known airline with an excellent reputation is Emirates. I never flew with them, but their service must be outstanding. Click here and see the deals Emirates offer.

Air New Zealand and the big Asian carriers like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Malaysia Airlines operate flights to Australia from Europe and America. Stops to refuel or change aircraft would be in the capital cities of the airline's origin.
You won't get many quick connections to Australian cities other than Sydney with them. Just check it out.

Now that's all the flights to Australia information in a nutshell. Unfortunately, I can't make the decision for you.

Happy planning, and good luck with your search for cheap flights to Australia.
