Canoeing Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre Yacht Club in Marree
Hi Rita, Response to Canoeing on Lake Eyreby: Rita Hi Joe and Jack, Jeez, you are seeking the big adventure. :) You definitely have to go to William Creek and along the Halligan Bay Track to see water. Right now the water level at Belt Bay is 1.4m deep. I really don't know if they hire canoes in Marree, or William Creek, I doubt it. I've never seen a sign of boat hire there. However, the Lake Eyre Yacht Club has it's boat house in Marree. A yacht club in the middle of the dry Australian Outback is something you won't expect either. I recommend that you check out their website, they have heaps of information about Lake Eyre, and they support folks who want to sail the lake. Best thing is to contact them, and ask for advice about canoeing on the lake. There are not many access points where you can take your car, and the boat. Launching a boat can be quite strenuous there. I guess the conditions can't be compared with a normal lake. Don't forget, this is a harsh land, be well prepared, and always take plenty of water. Find more info on my Lake Eyre page. Also check out more questions and comments about visiting Lake Eyre, there are some great tips there. Have fun and a safe trip. Please tell us about your adventures when you are back. It would be great to see a picture of you canoeing on Lake Eyre. :) Rita |
