Camping Road Trip Sydney to Uluru

Hi!

I've planned a road trip with 4wd to Uluru from Sydney for me and a friend in April for 10 nights - we were planning to camp on the way up there and back but I'm having trouble finding to exactly where you can put up a tent - are there designate camping grounds or national parks - do you need to book in advance?

Would very much appreciate some help - planning to take Stuart hwy route - happy to detour a little!

Hi Zoe,

The Stuart Highway can be a bit boring when you have to drive it twice. So a nice detour for one way would be the Oodnadatta Track and then through the Flinders Ranges. But don't forget to check the weather and road conditions. The Oodnadatta Track will be closed in wet weather.

You can camp on any caravan park / roadhouse along the way. There is no camping in the Uluru/Kata Tjuta NP, but the Ayers Rock Resort has a huge campground. I had never any problems on caravan and camp grounds to find a spot, so there's no need to book. I think most places wouldn't take bookings for camping anyway.

If you are looking for free campsites I recommend to get a camping guide like the Camps Australia Guide. In books like that you will find good spots to put up a tent for free.
