Corrugated road

Hiya,

We are planning a trip from leaving from Cairns. Driving to Alice Springs where we pick up a 4x4. Then we wanted to make our way to Wolfe Creek. Finally dropping off the 4x4 in Darwin.
A long Journey but we have a month to do it. Can you suggest what routes to take. I think the only road from Alice springs to Wolfe Creek is the Tanami Road which I've heard different things about.
Is the Tanami a good idea??

Tanami Road

Hi Ben,

Yo are right, the Tanami Road / Track is the only way to Wolfe Creek from Alice.

The fact that you have heard different things about the road is that the track is for sure in different conditions during the year. So it all depends on when you go, what the weather has been like recently, and so on.

I haven't been northwest of Alice yet, but I found very useful info about the Tanami Road for you.

i travelled the tanami in 2007 it wasnt so bad just slow down as the road deteriorates, we left Alice and over nighted at Tilmouth Well then next night at Wolfe creek crater but it was well into the day when we arrived. The road for us seem to get worse once we crossed the WA border.

just 1 more thing as you leave wolfe creek for halls creek - take it easy as you cross the range - MANY serious accidents in this area due to the build up of gibber stones on the corners.

its a great drive take in all the sights
