Birdsville Races

Hi There, our big question is will we get thru' to Birdsville from Mildura & Melbourne? We are 2 couples travelling together, 1 camper trailer & 1 caravan. Been planning the trip all year.

Hi Sandra,

It is frustrating if you plan a trip and it remains uncertain whether or not you'll be able to make it. But that's exactly the truth for a journey to the Birdsville area right now. I don't know what the conditions will be like in September.

As of today (14th July 2010) the Birdville Track is closed due to rain. The Cooper is running across the track, however, when the track is open, a ferry service is running. Another but... caravans are not allowed on the ferry. Trailers are allowed as long as the towing vehicle and the trailer don't excee 7,8 m, and you can't transport the trailer separately, it must be hitched to the car.

At the moment you won't be able to go to Birdsville through Innamincka because all roads in this area are closed as well. The Birdsville Developmental Road is closed east of Birdsville, so even the detour through Windorah wouldn't work.

Of course, it is still 7 weeks to the races, so hopefully things will improve until then.

Keep an eye on the road conditions in South Australia and Queensland.
