Birds at Lake Eyre

Hi Rita,
We made a fabulous 4 day Air Tour to Lake Eyre last year staying at Marree. Driving out to the lake was a wonderful experience but our flight over the lake was on a rainy day with little to see - it was the beginning of the super wet that stopped the Birdsville Races. Luckily our flight from Broken Hill to Marree was over lakes.

However we did not see a single bird. We want to return to see birds. We would love to receive some suggests for where we should go and when? Driving, flying, independent or on a tour we are open to suggestions.

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for your report and the great photo, you really got a beautiful shot there.

Well, the birds, it is hard to say where to see them best. I read that in the 2009 flood they had huge flocks further north, at Goyder Lagoon, Lake Machattie, and other salt pans in southeast Qld.

Perhaps other readers were lucky and saw birds. Would be great if you can give Suzanne some tips.

Birds in the wetlands

I haven't been there since the rains came, but I've heard that there are lots of birds on the Eyre Creek system between Boulia and Birdsville, especially in the lakes south of Bedourie. Check the Tourist Information Bureau at Boulia. There may be an aerial charter service in the area.
