Adelaide - Uluru and onto Alice

Camping at Cadney Park

Camping at Cadney Park

First time adventure for many of us, want to see the beauty and take in the greatness of mother earth. We may be 30 people travelling together and looking for nice stops along the way, not pubs/motels or anything like that - real auzzie outback desert stuff!

We have 10 days for the adventure and would like to have the opportunities to really appreciate the magic of what's out there. Any hints of where we can camp, where we should stay for longer and what to take would be great.

We hope to meet with aboriginal elders along the way at specific places - if you know of any old communities it would be lovely to get an idea. We are calling it a peace tour to Uluru.

Thanks for any help and/ hints, much appreciated to make the most of this wonderful opportunity. We are leaving in April.

Camping along the highway
by: Rita

Well, I am not sure what the "real Australian desert stuff" is in your opinion, and if you will find it travelling along the Stuart Highway.

Are you looking for bushcamping sites along the highway? You can certainly find some spots along the route, but remember:

* Between Woomera and Coober Pedy you travel through the Woomera Prohibited Area, you are not allowed to leave the highway there.

* There is the saying "Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints", so if you consider camping with a group of 30 camping somewhere in the bush, it is hard to leave only footprints.
* The land along the tracks and highways is probably private land, and you can't go too far away from the road without checking with the landowner when you want to set up a large camp.

All towns and roadhouses along the Stuart Highway have camping areas with facilities.

Camping in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is not allowed. The Ayers Rock Resort outside the National Park has a large campground.

As for meeting Aboriginal Elders, you need a permit when you want to enter Aboriginal land and communities. Find more information on the Central Land Council Website.

A peace tour to Uluru sounds great to me. I wish you a good time in this beautiful country.

Rita
