Coober Pedy Kanyaka ruins near Hawker

Hi Rita,

Just wondering if a 4WD is required for the above itinerary in January. We wouldn't be doing any off road driving but is the trip from Coober Pedy to Marree via William Ck and then down to Leigh Ck considered car or 4WD worthy at that time of year?

Cheers Emma

It depends on the weather
by: Rita

Hi Emma,

Well, what shall I say? The recent weather conditions in the south eastern Australian Outback make it hard to predict anything.

According to the long-time weather statistics from the Australian weather bureau January and February are the wettest months in Oodnadatta, while August and September are the driest.
Right now everything is wet out there, tracks are closed, or only recommended for 4WD.

In dry conditions you can do the trip with a normal car. It will be hot in January, so take plenty of water.
Keep an eye on the road conditions in South Australia and the long-term weather forecasts.

Good luck,
Rita
