If this newsletter was forwarded to you, I would be happy to see you subscribe to the Bush Telegraph here

Once again I am late with the newsletter, I am really sorry about the delay.

You might be surprised about the title of this edition, sounds somewhat serious, doesn't it? Well, we all know about the world-wide environmental problems caused by exploitation and misuse of our natural resources. These problems also touch Australia's ancient Outback.

Anyway, I have added a new page about Thargomindah and its claim to fame in the 19th century. A couple of days later, my Aussie mates made me aware of this article and the serious state of Australia's largest river system, the Murray-Darling. (Click to read the article)

That's a photo of the Darling river at Louth, taken 2004. It is hard to believe that paddle steamers were once running up and down a river that is now merely a trickle.

I keep my fingers crossed for some wise decisions of Australian politicians and that folks in the Outback gets all the rain they need.

Now I am off the soapbox, and back to the daily business :).

* Outback Guide News *

I hope you all enjoyed the animal pages I introduced to you in the last edition. As always, if you're looking for specific subjects, please refer to the table of content to find the stuff you are looking for.

Kangaroo pictures - It is not easy to take close-up photos of animals. I've use the photos from AllPosters on the Outback Guide. If you've fallen in love with a particular picture, you can purchase a poster from the poster store.

The Australian states - more facts about Australia. This page might probably be a bit boring for Aussies, it certainly reminds you on your geography lessons :). However, I thought a collection of facts and statistics is interesting for my visitors from around the world.

Windorah - the heart of the channel country. Just outside of Windorah I saw the reddest sand dunes ever. It is a great place to relax and watch a stunning Outback sunset.

Thargomindah - first town in Australia that used hydro-electric power to light its streets. I was lucky to receive a private demonstration how they produced the electricity in the early days. See the page about renewable energy.

* Coming Outback events *

Outback events are an enjoyable occasion for Outback folks. People travel 100 km ore more to join a race, a rodeo, or a B&S ball in the next town. Why do not join while you are out there?

Sunday 13 July 2008 - XXXX Gold Port Augusta Cup - Port Augusta is at the foot of the majestic Flinders Ranges. People come from near and far to join this Outback Cup day. There’ll be entertainment all day for everyone. Then there’s the racing - the Club has a unique dirt racecourse bordered by delightful grassed lawns, and the trackside atmosphere is terrific.

Friday 4 July to Saturday 5 July 2008 - Opal Expo Festival in Winton - The Queensland opal association holds this annual festival where miners from all opal fields come to Winton to trade with national and international buyers and the public. It's a social event with dance, good food, and hopefully good business for those who've been working hard all year.

Saturday 5 July to Sunday 6 July 2008 - The Stockman's Challenge - Bronco Branding and Gymkhana, is held in Windorah. This action packed event attracts the whole family. The Gymkhana on Saturday has horse and motorbike events for all ages. On Sunday witness the pioneer way of branding calves in the Bronco Branding competition and marvel at the skill involved in the Stockman's Challenge where horse and rider negotiate obstacle courses, round up cattle, display whip cracking and perform intricate steps in the pattern work. Food and drinks, as well as fee camping is available.

Saturday 12 July 2008 - Alice Springs Imparja Camel Cup - A day of fun for all ages. I bet you haven't been to many camel races by now. Read more about Australian camels on the Outback guide, or click here for more info about this outstanding Outback event.

I hope you enjoyed the news from the Outback.

Until next time.

See ya, Rita
