"Water is flowing into Lake Eyre!" This cry has been going around the Australian Outback for weeks now. After heavy rains in Outback Queensland earlier this year, water is flowing down the creeks and channels into South Australia.

After years of drought this is an exciting event for everyone in the region. How long the water will continue to flow is not predictable yet. At first, statements expected several months, but the water flow could stop anytime. So it is still unclear how much water Lake Eyre will receive in the end, 30 %, or closer to full capacity?

Tour operators are still reluctant to offer tours to the shores of Lake Eyre. The lake is only accessible on a few points, and tourists want to see water when they go there. However, tour operators that offer scenic flights are very lucky. It must be awesome to fly over the vast lake and check the water levels.

* New pages on Rita's Outback Guide. *

The link to the Port Augusta page didn't work in the last newsletter. I apologise for that. So here it is again.

  • Port Augusta - The city on top of Spencer Gulf is the starting point to the real South Australian Outback.
  • Lake Eyre - Of course, I wrote a page about Lake Eyre now, it was long overdue. There is a link on the Lake Eyre page to a satellite image about the current status of the lake. The image is updated every few weeks, so it is worth to follow what is going to happen.
I wish I could be there!
  • Your Australian Outback Stories - Yes, you can add your travel story to the Outback Guide. I invite you to share your adventures and your favourite photo with me and our readers. You can also ask your questions through these forms.
Every contribution will be published on a separate page, and I can email you the link to Your page. It is really easy.
  • The next two pages are examples of reader's contributions. Your entry can have as many words as you like to write. There are no limits.:)
  • Cycling from Darwin to Adelaide That's a task, isn't it? With good preparation it can be done.
Check out this comprehensive website if you are interested in great bicycle adventures
  • Gunbarrel Hwy/Great Central Road Reader's question about fuel supplies in this area.

  • Of course, you can add a comment to any contribution. Let's make the Outback Guide a forum for Outback travellers. :)

* Updated pages on Rita's Outback Guide. *

I have overhauled quite a few of the older pages in the Outback Guide, especially the entire Oodnadatta Track section. Optimized the photos and added bits and pieces of new information.

*Outback News*

I already told you in the last edition about the massive bird life north of Birdsville after the recent rains.

Look at the photos in this article in the Australian. It is unbelievable.
When I travelled north of Birdsville a couple of years ago, it was so dry, and not many birds around.

This is another story from a newspaper I found just today. Another impact of the recent rains in Queensland. If you fear spiders, you better don't read this article.
I don't want to put you off travelling to Australia with stories like that. I just think it is interesting to see the changes in nature after those unusual rainfalls.

The Department of Environment and Heritage has canceled the closure for the Flinders /Gammon Ranges National Parks in May. I am sorry if I spoilt someone's plans with my announcement of the closure in the last edition of the Bush Telegraph.

*Outback Events*

6th and 7th July 2009 - This is the weekend you should be in Marree! Marree picnic races on Saturday and the Bronco branding on Sunday offer true Outback fun.

4th July 2009 - Another big event in Marree - the Australian camel cup celebrates Marree's history and the legendary Afghan cameleers. Watch 13 camel races, enjoy live music, experience unique Outback culture. Connect a visit to one of these great events with a scenic flight and a tour to Lake Eyre. I know it is worthwhile.

If you want to know more about Outback events, or probably want your favourite Outback event listed, please contact me at the The Bush Telegraph

* Newsletter Outlook*

Don't miss the next edition of the Bush Telegraph with more news from Australia and my Outback Guide.

The Gammon Ranges National Park and Arkaroola will be the next chapter of the Outback Guide.

I know I promised this already for this edition, but Lake Eyre came in between.
