First of all, I am glad to tell you that the devastating bushfires in Victoria are under control. Communities and residents of the affected areas have started to rebuild their homes, schools, and other community buildings. Let's hope, that life will be back to normal for them soon.

If you want to read more about the tragedy of February 2009, check out my page about Australian bushfires.

In this issue of the Bush Telegraph I am going to introduce you to a new area of the South Australian Outback, the Gawler Ranges.

I have added a couple of pages to the Outback Guide about this wonderful region in South Australia's west. Peter (my husband) and I spent a few awesome days in the Gawler Ranges together with our Australian friends. What did we like best? That is hard to tell, everything was wonderful. However, the drive along the conical hill track in the Gawler Ranges NP was most exciting and fun.

The Gawler Ranges are an area of rocky landscapes and glistening salt lakes. There are not many facilities yet, so it is still a bit of a wilderness area. Hopefully, it stays like that for a while.

* New pages on Rita's Outback Guide. *

  • Gawler Ranges - Introduction to one of the oldest mountain ranges in Outback South Australia.
  • Gawler Ranges National Park - The park protects an unique area of ancient volcanic rock formations and unique flora and fauna. Have your 4 wheel drive car fit and ready for some great driving adventures.
  • Mount Ive Station - This running sheep station in the heart of the Gawler Ranges offers travellers great Outback accommodation. If you're lucky, you can watch the shearers doing their hard job.
I said this before, Station stays are a popular way to experience life in the Australian Outback while you are on holidays.
  • Lake Gairdner - This vast salt lake is usually dry. Located at the northern boundary of Mt. Ive station, the station offers the only public access to this glistening lake. Don't miss it when you are in the area.
  • Port Augusta - The city on top of Spencer Gulf is the starting point to the real South Australian Outback.

* Updated pages on Rita's Outback Guide. *

I have revamped the homepage, and I hope it makes it easier for your to explore my always growing guide.

Check out the Australian cities and towns page frequently, as I am adding always new towns to this page. It should help you to plan your trip to the Australian Outback.

*Outback News*

After the recent rain in parts of Queensland, rivers and channels filled with water in the far south-west of Queensland. Wildflowers and fresh sprouts abound in the usually dry landscapes.

Around Birdsville and Bedourie huge flocks of water birds appeared to breed as long as there is water and fish in the channels.

Along the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia locals are waiting for the floodwaters to arrive and fill Lake Eyre. Tour operators are ready to show travellers and nature lovers this rare and amazing event.

Important notice: If you plan to travel in the Flinders / Gammon Ranges area in May 2009, please note that Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park will be closed from Sunday, 10 May 2009, until Friday, 15 May 2009.
