Arkaroola wilderness sanctuary

Time is flying, and it is the end of the year again. I hope you enjoyed joining me on my journeys to the Australian Outback this year.
The Bush Telegraph continues to tell you news and stories from the Outback in 2010 as well.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year 2010.

* Important Issue - You all can help *

The wonderful Arkaroola wilderness sanctuary is threatened to be ruined by uranium mining activities. The South Australian government has released a report titled “Seeking a Balance – Conservation and resource use in the Northern Flinders Ranges." Right now, Arkaroola's protection status is much better than it would be when the "Seeking a balance" classification becomes reality.
The government requests for comments on the management policies and zones until 29 January 2010. Please send your comments soon, and help to save Arkaroola.
For more background information and sample letters to help you to write your comment, see the Save Arkaroola Website. Thanks for your help.

* News from Australia and the Outback *

Darwin to Melbourne Thank You Camel Expedition

Russell Osborne and Ros Consoli finished an epic camel trek through the Australian Outback last month.
The couple walked 6000 km with 8 camels from Darwin to Melbourne, crossing remote deserts in the Northern Territory, Western and South Australia.
Purpose of the adventure was to raise funds for Moira Kelly's Children First Foundation. It's the foundation that brought the conjoined Bangladeshi twins Trishna and Krishna to Australia where the twins were separated in a marathon operation in November.
Good news! The twins were released from hospital yesterday, they will celebrate their third birthday on Tuesday.

Australian Weather

People in Adelaide suffered from a record heatwave with temperatures around and over 40°C in November. That was about the same time when we celebrated my husband's birthday in Adelaide last year, on a very cool 14°C day.
At the same time, residents of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt in Queensland cleaned up after severe hail storms.
A tropical storm that brought Darwin 250 millimetres of rain in 24 hours a week ago, moved westwards and devoloped into cyclone Laurence. It dumped some much needed rain on the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

* New pages and reader's submissions on the Outback Guide *

New pages on the Outback Guide focus on Sydney. Sure, that's not exactly the Outback, however, visitors from abroad are sometimes at a loss to know what to explore when they arrive in a big city after a long flight. So I am going to add a few pages about Australia's capital cities every now and then.

Things to do in Sydney gives you an overview of Sydney's highlights.

Looking for a great way to spend New Years Eve in Sydney? Don't know how to welcome the New Year yet? Spoil yourself, and spend the last night of the year on Sydney Harbour.

A visit to Tarongs Zoo in Sydney is not just for the kids. We all love animals, don't we?

For friends of opera, ballet and symphony, a visit to Sydney Opera House is a highlight. Even if classical music is not your thing, here are some amazing Sydney Opera House Facts to discover.

The beaches in Sydney page introduces you to some of the jewels along Sydney's coastline.

The Blue Mountains are only an hour west of Sydney, but you can get a glimpse the Australian bush in this wilderness area.

I really enjoy reader's submissions, it is fun to answer them. This is also a great way to get to know the readers, and learn what kind of information you are looking for.

So if you have questions, or tips for other readers, feel free to comment on any topic.

Since the last newsletter Jan from the Netherlands has updated his route map, and worked hard on his itinerary. Follow his updates on Brisbane-Bourke-Broken Hill-Adelaide

Back to the past John Wade from England submitted this lovely story and photos of his return to a Queensland Station after nearly 40 years.

Great Outback Drive - Corner Country - Another beautiful photo and inspiring story from Terry Everson. This is exactly the region I plan to visit with my Aussie mates next year. Watch out, there's more coming about the Corner Country.

Son travelling to Darwin - I couldn't believe Rebecca had so much trouble to book accommodation for her son. Is it really so hard for young people to stay in a motel, cabin etc on their own when they are travelling?

Sometimes I get questions I just can't answer. Aboriginal Santa at Christmas was one of these. If anyone know if, and how, the Aboriginal communities celebrate Christmas, it would be great if you post your answer, thanks.

Finally, here are some tips how to carry a jerry fuel can safely inside the car. In my opinion, fuel cans smell, so if possible I avoid using them.

* Australian Outback Gifts *

Only a few days until Christmas, so if you need a last minute Christmas gift, have a look around the Outback Guide stores.
Give yourself, or a friend, a beautiful Australian gift for Christmas, check out the Australian calendars, created by Australian photographers.

It has taken a couple of visits to Australia, but finally, I got a pair of unique Australian Ugg Boots to survive the German winter.

Oh well, winter already hit us hard this year in Germany. -10°C and lots of snow last weekend. But it is getting a bit warmer, so probably no white Christmas. I don't need it anyway, lol.

If you like the Bush Telegraph, please pass it on to your friends, they might like it, too. If this newsletter was forwarded to you, I would be happy to see you subscribe to the Bush Telegraph here
