Australian Slang

Some Aussie slang words for you

What do you want to know about Australian slang?

It is generally known that Australians speak English, Australian English. It's a colouful language, the Aussies call it "strine", or Aussie slang. "G'day mate, how ya goin'?" Don't you just love to be greeted in such a friendly way?

Would you understand Australians? Yes - if English is your native language. For everyone who learned English at school as a foreign language the Australian lingo can be a problem. Of course you'll get used to it, like I did. I just love Aussie slang, even if I still don't understand everything :).

The Cambridge Dictionary defines strine: Australian English, or the way that Australians pronounce English words.

Here the problems begin. Australians usually speak fairly quick, and they mumble! (Aussies, please forgive me, but that's the way a foreigner sees it).

counter meal

Enjoy a counter meal in an Outback pub. It's part of the Australian life style.

XXXX

XXXX is the Queensland beer that goes well with a counter meal

Apart from mumbling Australians use many words that you won't find in an English dictionary. These are just unique Australian words. Like some unspeakable town names, many words come from the Aboriginal language.

Aussies also have the habit to shorten words, for example:

  • afternoon - arvo
  • breakfast - brekkie
  • relative - rello
This habit doesn't make it easier to understand Australians, does it?

You will be surprised at your first visit down under!

No worries - the Aussie slang guide is here for your help!
